Learn a New Language on Holiday

The best way to really understand a culture and its people is through its language. Make the most of your holiday overseas, and learn to speak a foreign language while you travel. Here are our favourite places to soak up a new culture, and converse with the locals. You don’t need a long holiday for language courses – you’ll be amazed what you can achieve in a week!

Italian
With many short language courses on offer, you can study throughout the country, from Milan in the north, through Tuscany, Rome and Naples, to Taormina in southern Sicily. Italian language courses generally run for a minimum of two weeks, and take place in the mornings, allowing plenty of time for sightseeing in the afternoons.

Spanish
You’ll need to know some Spanish when you’re travelling through North, Central and South America, as well as in Spain itself. The largest cities; Barcelona, Madrid, Seville and Valencia, boast a range of courses, with some school networks also offering lessons in Mexico. With options ranging from a week to a year, many courses also take care of local accommodation if required. Take a siesta after class, then head off to a flamenco course in the evening (make sure you’ve got your travel insurance covered before you slip into those flamenco heels!)

Japanese
With many thousands of characters, Japanese is a hard language to master, but Japanese people are very welcoming of any attempt to speak their language. Schools abound in the Tokyo metropolitan area, as well as in other key cities like Kyoto and Yokohama. Typically, program fees will include airport pickup, a welcome pack, orientation, tuition, accommodation, books and completion certificate!

Wherever you go, make sure you make the most of every opportunity to practice your new language skills.
Also make sure you’re fully covered by planning travel insurance for your course, any study tours and all those other adventures you’ll have along the way.
